Street nurses bring care to city’s darkest corners
Friday, October 23, 2009
Almost every evening, nurse practitioner Barbara Sexton boards the Night Ministry’s bus to provide blood tests, Hepatitis A and B immunizations, flu shots and condoms to homeless people, sex workers and drug users.
Nurse Rosanna Jackson, president of the nonprofit Gift House, regularly cruises the streets of North Lawndale, Austin and Little Village in a van to provide needle exchange, test for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and counsel drug abusers.
“Without this kind of care, people would just go on relying on emergency rooms, which are already overburdened.” Sexton said. “Our focus is to give people early treatment so they can avoid having to go.”
