With Doctors in Short Supply, Responsibilities for Nurses May Expand
Thursday, November 12, 2009
If the health care system is overhauled, patients and practitioners are likely to face a primary care bottleneck, experts say. An estimated 30 million newly insured people will begin making appointments for check-ups and other routine care with physicians who are already stretched thin caring for existing patients.
The increase in demand may well put an end to a simmering policy dispute over the circumscribed role of nurse practitioners in medical care. If tens of millions of new patients enter the health care system, it seems clear that nurse practitioners will be needed to perform many of the tasks now performed by physicians.

Street nurses bring care to city’s darkest corners
Friday, October 23, 2009
Almost every evening, nurse practitioner Barbara Sexton boards the Night Ministry’s bus to provide blood tests, Hepatitis A and B immunizations, flu shots and condoms to homeless people, sex workers and drug users.
Nurse Rosanna Jackson, president of the nonprofit Gift House, regularly cruises the streets of North Lawndale, Austin and Little Village in a van to provide needle exchange, test for pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and counsel drug abusers.
“Without this kind of care, people would just go on relying on emergency rooms, which are already overburdened.” Sexton said. “Our focus is to give people early treatment so they can avoid having to go.”
